Sweep Frequency Response Analysis (SFRA) has become one of the more advanced diagnostic techniques for detecting mechanical and electrical displacement within transformer windings and core structures. Modern power transformers are exposed to numerous stresses during transportation, installation, short-circuit events, seismic disturbances, aging, and operational faults. While traditional electrical tests such as winding resistance, insulation resistance, turns ratio, and power factor testing provide valuable information about the electrical integrity of the transformer, they often fail to identify subtle mechanical deformations within the active part. SFRA bridges this gap by offering a highly sensitive fingerprinting method capable of detecting winding movement, core displacement, clamping issues, deformation, open circuits, shorted turns, and transportation damage.
Despite the effectiveness of SFRA, inaccurate test procedures, improper grounding, inconsistent setup conditions, incorrect reference comparisons, and lack of interpretation expertise can lead to misleading conclusions. As a result, understanding the “Do’s and Don’ts” of SFRA testing is essential for obtaining reliable and repeatable results.
