Multi-function transformer test systems

Megger’s multifunction transformer test systems and van solutions deliver a complete, integrated approach to transformer testing—bringing wide test capability, accuracy, and simplicity to field and factory diagnostics.

Megger’s multifunction transformer test systems combine the capability of several dedicated instruments into one integrated platform. The category includes TRAX, TDX, TTRU/TVT, and TAU3, providing test technicians with everything needed to assess transformer condition efficiently and confidently.

These systems support a long list of transformer measurements—ratio, polarity, excitation current, winding resistance, leakage reactance, PF/TD, dielectric response (narrowband DFR), demagnetization, and more—streamlining field workflows while improving diagnostic accuracy.

Designed for portability, speed, and repeatability, Megger’s multifunction solutions help users detect ageing, degradation, contamination, mechanical deformation, OLTC issues, and insulation problems early, enabling informed maintenance and reduced downtime.

Frequently Asked Questions

A dedicated transformer ohmmeter provides fast, safe, and stable winding resistance results—especially on large power transformers—and includes integrated demagnetization.

However, a TRAX multifunction tester performs winding resistance along with turns ratio, PF/TD, excitation, leakage reactance, and many other tests, making it a better investment for users who require a wider test capability.

Winding resistance is performed:

  • on delivery of new transformers (detecting transport damage)
  • during routine maintenance (identifying developing faults)
  • when diagnosing operational issues
  • during OLTC evaluation

Any deviation from baseline can indicate loose connections, bad contacts, or OLTC deterioration.

Narrowband DFR uses a limited frequency range (approx. 1–500 Hz), allowing faster testing and direct analysis.

It provides:

  • earlier indication of insulation issues compared to PF/TD at 50/60 Hz
  • confirmation that PF/TD values are genuinely good
  • ability to determine the transformer’s Individual Temperature Correction (ITC) factor
  • Megger’s TRAX and DELTA4000 support narrowband DFR

Following IEEE C57.152, transformer diagnostics typically include:

  • turns ratio & polarity
  • excitation current
  • leakage reactance (short-circuit impedance)
  • winding resistance
  • capacitance & PF/TD

Testing also extends to related components:

  • Bushings — narrowband DFR provides deeper insight than PF/TD alone
  • OLTCs — dynamic resistance measurement (DRM) complements static winding resistance
  • Additional techniques — FRSL (frequency response of stray losses) and magnetic balance

Megger’s multifunction systems also include safe de-energization, automatic core demagnetization, and adaptive algorithms to ensure accurate results.
