Static electric motor analysers

Detect and confidently diagnose faults in motors, generators, and coils with our electric motor testing equipment

Ensure the reliability of your motors with Megger’s specialised static electric motor analysers. Designed to safely detect failures before they cause disruptions, our advanced testing equipment helps you maintain smooth operations and mitigate against costly downtime. Gain valuable insights into the health of your rotating machines and keep them performing at their best for the long term.

Frequently asked questions

We can explain how to test a motor as a simple step-by-step process as follows:

  1. Essential for safety: de-energise the motor and lock out/tag out (LOTO) to prevent accidental startup. Discharge the capacitors and disconnect the motor from the circuit.
  2. Select the correct test voltage, following the motor manufacturer’s recommendations.
  3. Connect the Megger tester – the positive (red) lead connects to the motor winding terminal, and the negative (black) lead connects to the motor frame (ground).
  4. Perform the Insulation Resistance Test by setting the Megger to the correct voltage and pressing the test button.
  5. Interpret the results on the display screen – a sudden drop in resistance indicates degraded insulation.

You may also need to use tests such as Polarisation Index (PI) or Step Voltage Test for fuller insights.

There are a few key times when it’s especially important to use our electric motor testing equipment:

  • During routine maintenance to prevent unexpected failures
  • After repairs or rewinding to check insulation integrity (use our analysers’ inbuilt motor winding tester)
  • Before installing a new motor, so you can be sure there are no manufacturing defects
  • After exposure to moisture or contamination to assess any insulation damage

You can use our static motor analysers to test:

  • AC induction motors
  • DC motors
  • Synchronous motors
  • Generators and alternators
  • Coils, transformers and stator windings
