VLF Sine 45 kV
One unit for VLF, DC, sheath testing and (with ESG NT2) sheath fault pinpointing—ideal for field work and cable test vans.
Run TanDelta step tests on-board, then get consistent pass/warn/fail style interpretation to IEEE 400.2—or apply your own limits across a fleet.
Automatic 0.01–0.1 Hz frequency adjustment helps you test longer cables efficiently while maintaining stable test voltage quality.
Breakdown detection, earth‑loop monitoring and automatic discharge reduce risk, and help limit stress on fault‑free insulation.
Store 1000+ tests internally, review results on screen, and export datasets via USB into MeggerBook Lite for clear, repeatable reporting.
About the product
High‑performance testing and diagnostics for medium‑voltage cables
The VLF Sine 45 is a compact, robust test and diagnostic system designed for commissioning, maintenance and condition assessment of MV cables. It delivers a true 0.1 Hz sinusoidal test voltage up to 45 kVpeak (32 kVrms), plus DC and VLF rectangular voltage, so you can run the right test voltage shape for the asset and the standard you’re working to.
All‑rounder for field testing and deeper diagnostics
- VLF withstand testing for new installations and in‑service cables
- Optional internal TanDelta (dielectric loss factor) step testing, with automatic evaluation to IEEE 400.2 or your own threshold levels
- Sheath testing and sheath fault pinpointing to IEC 60229 (with the optional ESG NT2 step voltage probe)
- Monitored withstand testing with TanDelta or partial discharge measurement for deeper diagnostic insight
Designed to handle long cables without compromising test quality
The system automatically adapts test frequency (0.01–0.1 Hz) to cable length/capacitance, helping you test higher‑capacitance loads efficiently. With a maximum test capacity of up to 10 μF (at reduced voltages/frequencies), it’s well suited to a wide range of MV networks. For extended capabilities, it can be paired with the optional VLF CR‑40‑TB booster to increase test performance up to 5 μF at 0.1 Hz and 40 kVrms.
Built‑in safety and faster reporting
Integrated breakdown detection, earth-loop monitoring and automatic discharge help protect both the operator and the test object. A 7" colour touchscreen, intuitive on-board software, and a rotary control that can be used while wearing gloves make the system easier to operate in real working conditions. Internal memory stores at least 1000 measurements, supporting efficient reporting and record keeping. Results can be reviewed on the unit and exported via USB for reporting in MeggerBook Lite (included), or for more advanced reporting and archiving in the full version of MeggerBook. The system is also prepared for wireless data transfer.
Expandable to partial discharge testing
As a power source for the optional PDS 62‑SIN PD attachment, the VLF Sine 45 kV can be expanded into a universal system for withstand testing, TanDelta diagnostics and PD measurements.
FAQ / Frequently Asked Questions
No. TanDelta step tests and evaluation can be performed directly on the instrument (option required), with results exportable for reporting.
The system automatically adapts test frequency (0.01–0.1 Hz) based on cable capacitance, helping you test higher‑capacitance loads more efficiently.
Yes. In combination with the optional ESG NT2 step voltage probe, the system supports sheath fault pinpointing to IEC 60229.
Export measurement datasets via USB and import them into MeggerBook Lite (included) or the full MeggerBook software to generate reports and archive results.
VLF sine withstand testing, VLF rectangular testing, DC testing up to ±45 kV, and sheath testing up to −20 kV DC. With options, it supports TanDelta diagnostics and partial discharge testing.

Troubleshooting
Check the safety circuit messages on screen and address the cause:
- F‑Ohm: Earth resistance too high. Confirm the earth cable and HV cable shield are connected correctly and have clean metallic contact.
- EMERGENCY OFF switch: Emergency stop has been pressed. Remove the cause, then manually release the emergency stop on the front panel / external safety unit.
- Key switch locked: Unlock the safety key switch to allow HV operation.
- Overtemperature: Allow the unit to cool, then restart.
- HV cable not correctly connected: Ensure the HV connection cable is properly locked into the HV output.
- Boost module not ready: Check the booster connection and status, then power-cycle if required.
Export the system log (in the extended settings menu) to a USB flash drive and share it with Megger service for faster diagnosis.
Interpreting test results
Withstand testing
- A test is typically considered passed when the defined test time completes without a breakdown and the system shuts down normally.
- If a breakdown is detected, the system automatically aborts the test, switches off the HV generator and discharges the test object. The shutdown screen shows the cause and the breakdown voltage. The cable should then be treated as faulty and moved to fault location, since further voltage-based diagnostic tests can no longer be carried out.
TanDelta diagnostics (option)
- TanDelta step tests provide a measure of insulation ageing (dielectric losses). The instrument can evaluate results automatically using built‑in standards based on IEEE 400.2, or using your in‑house limit sets.
- For consistent fleet‑wide decisions, you can create and distribute your own evaluation standards via MeggerBook (export/import *.tds files).
Reporting and audit trail
- Review results on the instrument, then export datasets to a USB flash drive and import them into MeggerBook Lite / MeggerBook to create reports and archive measurements.
- Tip: Set the correct time zone on the instrument before testing so the report timestamps match your records.

The setup file below is suitable for the installation of both MeggerBook (full version) and MeggerBook Lite (free limited version).
When started with after adding the electronic license key into the installed software, the software starts as MeggerBook full version which allows for easy and comprehensive data evaluation, data archiving, cable management and report creation. A personal quotation for a certain number of licenses can be requested here . The new electronic license key allows for 3 devices to have MeggerBook full version installed on them.
The dongle key licenses from older versions of MeggerBook are not supported with this newer version. Updated electronic license keys can be requested here for previous customers.
Without the required software license key the software starts as MeggerBook Lite which allows for seamless report creation and offers some of the features as the full version while limiting the data storage options as follows:
• Measurements, analyses and reports are not permanently stored in the database
• While cable import and storage are not limited, a maximum of 5 cables can be created using the cable editor of the Lite Edition
At this time, the software can handle the measurement and test data of the following Megger devices:
Test vans: Centrix 2.0, Primeon Centrix City, Compact City, R30 2.0, Variant
Test systems: VLF Sine 34 / 37 / 45 / 62, VLF CR 40/60, TDS 40/60, Easytest 20, MFM 10
TDRs: Teleflex VX(-P), Teleflex SX-1
Note for test systems VLF Sine Wave 45 and VLF Sine Wave 62:
Data of these test systems can only be imported into the software, if the test systems is equipped with firmware version 3.14 or higher. The latest firmware can be found here (VLF Sine Wave 45) and here (VLF Sine Wave 62).
