Offline and Online PD testing on Rotating Machines above 2kV

Testing Tactics Webinar

Partial Discharge (PD) testing is widely accepted as a way to measure the health of insulation on Rotating Machines, with numerous standards and case studies demonstrating the benefits of finding and repairing faults before they become failures by utilizing charge magnitudes, pulse counts, and a phase resolved PD pattern (PRPD). From offline site acceptance testing to online monitoring, there are various methods to accomplish PD testing during the lifetime of a rotating machine and various types of measurement tools to complete the test.

At the beginning of a machine’s life, it may undergo an offline factory acceptance test or a site acceptance test to determine its quality and establish a baseline for future measurements. These tests enable the OEMs to find manufacturing defects before the units are put in service. During the machine’s service life, online testing can be performed to periodically check the insulation. As these are online and in field tests, the measurement instruments must weigh the tradeoff between ease of use for the operators and technical information provided to the owners. Online testing enables the switch from time-based maintenance to condition based maintenance and online monitoring. Finally, online monitoring allows for real time continuous data. These are more advanced solutions, requiring operator knowledge to set up and check on the unit. They also provide the most comprehensive look at the online unit, trigger based alarms, historical data, and remote access. Ultimately PD testing and monitoring provides the most time to react to any developing faults within the machine.

This webinar would be most beneficial for manufacturing engineers, motor shops, and service contractors.
