The MetryView smart grid sensor management and analytics software works with our network of sensors to seamlessly integrate with the network owner’s DMS and infrastructure.

Once the sensors are deployed, they automatically create a secured mesh network among themselves. The sensors also report any abnormal events, such as surges and changes in current or voltage, and send full details to the MetryView software for further analysis.

The MetryView software is capable of further analysing the data from all the sensors in parallel, converting it into formats that facilitate decision making, and linking to benefits like SAIDI, SAIFI, and CML improvements.

MetryView plays a crucial role in the smart grid monitoring system, serving as the interface that transforms the raw data provided by the smart grid sensors into visually compelling and actionable graphics. What is MetryView, and how does it function?

MetryView is Megger's software solution designed to provide comprehensive monitoring and analysis of electrical parameters. It collects and reports data such as current, voltage, power, and harmonic distortion (THD) from various sensors in the grid. This data is periodically updated, typically every five minutes, allowing utilities to monitor grid performance, identify faults, and optimise operations.

Can MetryView integrate with other systems, such as a Distribution Management System (DMS)?

Yes, MetryView can seamlessly integrate with Distribution Management Systems (DMS) and other grid management tools. This integration enables real-time data exchange, fault detection, and the creation of alarms and notifications for events such as faults and THD issues. This enhances the utility's ability to maintain grid reliability and respond quickly to problems.

Can the MetryView application be installed on the customer’s server, or can it only be located on an MGA server?

The application can be installed either on an MGA server on the Azure cloud or on the customer’s server. If on a customer’s server, MGA will not have access to the sensors in order to monitor or provide service. To do so, it is recommended that the customer provide secure access to this server, especially during the software installation process.

What type of communication protocols are used between the MS3010-GW/MS5000-GS units and the MetryView server?

TCP/IP with TLS encryption over cellular 2G/3G/4G. The MS3010 can also be connected via RS232 (direct wired connection), which can be converted to DNP3 or Ethernet.

What type of communication protocols are used between the MetryView server and SCADA/DMS?

DNP3 or IEC-104 or Modbus over TCP/IP.

What functions does the MetryView Server (the Aggregator) perform?

The MetryView Server communicates with cellular sensors, aggregates the sensor data, stores the information in a database, and offers presentation and analytics abilities.

What are the requirements for the MetryView Server in terms of hardware and software?

For a network containing 600 sets of sensors, it is recommended that the application server have 32 GB of RAM, 4 virtual cores at 2.6 GHz or higher, and a 1 TB SSD. The SQL Server should also have 32 GB of RAM, 4 virtual cores at 2.6 GHz or higher, and a 4 TB SSD. Both servers should run Windows Server 2016 or higher, with additional software requirements, such as IIS and SQL Server, also 2016 or higher.

Additionally, for cellular connections, configuring the APN (Access Point Name) may be required, depending on the network provider.

How is the single line diagram generated in MetryView?

Each diagram displayed in the Metryview software is built and designed by the MGA team based on the diagram provided by the customer. At the moment, this process is done manually by the MGA team. In the near future, MGA will provide a simple tool for customers to build and upload their own topology to their MetryView software.

How is the configuration of sensors and firmware managed in the system?

Sensor parameters and firmware can be configured using the RC tool, which connects to the sensors via the MetryView Service. The tool enables you to set detection algorithms, set alarm thresholds, upload new firmware, and monitor sensor status.

What security measures are in place for firmware upgrades to the sensors?

Sensor firmware upgrades are protected by symmetrical encryption algorithms, with encrypted files transferred from Metrycom to customers. The firmware can be locally uploaded via USB or remotely via the RC tool, ensuring secure authentication and preventing unauthorised access to the code.

Can the customer get live information on a sensor’s battery?

Yes. Among its many features, the MetryView application includes the ability to monitor battery conditions for all sensors (both for secondary and backup batteries). It not only provides information on the current status of the battery, but it also tells you if the battery is charging properly or not charging at all when there is sufficient power on the line.
