Renewable hydrogeneration facilities rely on large generators to convert mechanical energy from turbines that are driven by water into a form of clean electricity. Due to their criticality, regular condition assessment and properly planned maintenance is vital to ensure stable and continuous operation of the power plant. Partial discharge measurements have proven to be a key-element for condition assessment of the electrical insulation systems for various high voltage machinery. They have the capability to provide an in-depth analysis of current state of the main insulation and possibly identify defects at an early stage before permanent damage has occurred.
This session explains first the basic measurement principles behind partial discharge testing on rotating machinery in general, while focusing later on hydrogenerators and the specific challenges associated with PD measurements. It also gives recommendations on how to overcome these challenges in the field.
